References ? An obligation or no ?

They can make or break a career.

Can be the difference beteen getting a job or being on the dole.

Piece of power for the employer. If do not behave you will not get a good one.

So, is an employer obliged to give you a reference. If there was a straight answer, I would give it. If you want me to say 'Yes' or 'No', the short answer is 'No'.

Course it is not as simple as that.

If an employer does give one he is obliged to ensure it is accurate, factual and fair. For the employee and the potential new employer.

I could write all day about references and the things that go on with them. Maybe I will, at a later date.

For the moment though, I am sharing with you this link to a video about references. It is very interesting and informative. Produced by Terry Gorry, solicitor in Meath. Video link
