A WRC ruling confirms that an EU directive and the Protection of Employees (Employer's Insolvency) Act, 1984, oblige the state to make up shortfalls in workers' pensions where the business is insolvent. (Reference: The Irish Times). 

 

Sometimes when people come to us, we ask are they in an Occupational Pension scheme with their employer. Often people do not know if they are or even if their employer has one.

People's circumstances are different. As a general guideline, if employer has one, you should probably be in it. 

You have to ask about it. Employers often have it and do not around advertising it or shouting about it too much.
